News from the Schroon Lake Association: “Calling all friends and neighbors of Schroon Lake – save the date of Thursday, September 9th, 2021 for our First Annual Beach and Shoreline Cleanup.

The Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation has started a program to certify North Country lakes as a “Loon Friendly Lake”. The Loon Conservation project is a not-for-profit organization based in Saranac Lake with a mission of preserving, aiding and studying loon behavior and health in our region, as well as educating the public on the importance of loons to our ecosystem.

Together with East Shore Schroon Lake Association (ESSLA), your Schroon Lake Association (SLA) is working towards this goal for Schroon Lake.

To become certified there are several requirements, including the installation of fishing line recycling containers at the two primary boat launches on the lake.  The next major part is where you come in, which is why we are asking for help with the lake cleanup day.

Our cleanup will focus on the area from Eagle Point to the Scaroon Manor beach. Come prepared to wade the shoreline and collect fishing line and lures, cans, bottles, and more as all of these interfere with loon nesting and feeding and we want to encourage our loons to stick around and love Schroon Lake like we do.

Meet at the Scaroon Manor beach by noon on Thursday, September 9th 2021, and we will head south to Eagle Point collecting the garbage. It will be best to wear water shoes, since the bottom may contain sharp objects, and if you prefer to bring a canoe to carry the collected garbage, please feel free to do so. The cleanup should be completed by 3:00 PM. We suggest you contact us to register so we have an idea of the expected head count. To do so, contact Peter White, SLA Board Member, at tonguemtn@netscape.net
